Outer Islands, Croatia: Where to Eat and What to Do
The far Adriatic, the islands the ferries forget.
These are the islands you reach last. Vis, Mljet and Lastovo sit far enough out in the Adriatic that the day-trip crowds rarely make it, and the places here are quieter and slower for it. This region rewards travellers who will trade convenience for a real lunch off a boat, an unmarked konoba where the catch decides the menu, and a night sky with no light to spoil it. The free taster on this page is Konoba Senko in Mala Travna on Vis: no sign, no printed menu, whatever the sea gave up that morning, eaten slowly. Around it the guide holds island wine made the old way, sea coves you walk down to, a national park lake to swim, and bread that one harbour town still bakes its own way. Every place is checked against real sources and shown with a real licensed photograph. Verified, not invented. The full ten open inside the Croatia guide.
CC-BY-3.0Konoba Senko
There is no sign and no printed menu, and the writer Senko Karuza only cooks when he feels like it. You come down a dirt track, or arrive by boat, to a cove on Vis's quiet south side and eat whatever the sea gave up that morning: octopus, marinated small fish, grilled or bell-cooked catch, all of it slow. The wine is local Vugava and house-made, poured from plain bottles, and lunch runs into the afternoon between swims off the cliffs below. There is barely a phone signal and unreliable power. Book ahead, bring cash, and do not be in a hurry to leave.
